Rebuilding an international architecture organization’s brand from the ground up.

Role: Design Lead / ACD
Challenge
For more than 50 years, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat served as a global authority on skyscrapers, establishing standards, advancing research, and convening professionals across architecture, engineering, planning, and construction. But as the challenges facing cities evolved, the organization's name and identity increasingly defined it by building height rather than the broader impact of its work.
Under new leadership, the organization set out to expand its focus from tall buildings to the interconnected systems that make dense cities sustainable, equitable, and livable. The challenge was to reposition an established global institution without losing the recognition, credibility, and community it had built over decades.
Approach
Through member research, stakeholder interviews, and strategic positioning, we helped define a broader vision for the organization and explored how its name, messaging, and identity could better reflect that ambition.
The Council on Vertical Urbanism emerged as an evolution of the organization's legacy, shifting the conversation from building taller to building tall better. A new identity and visual language brought that positioning to life through a flexible system designed for a complex global organization, spanning regional chapters, publications, conferences, communications, and digital experiences.
Impact
The transformation gave the organization a clearer platform for its next chapter, expanding its relevance from individual buildings to the future of cities themselves. Built around verticality, sustainability, livability, and innovation, the new brand provides a shared framework for a global community while positioning CVU to lead a broader conversation about responsible density and the future of urban life.
